Millimeter-Wave GaN Power Amplifier Design

After my retirement in 2017 I felt the need to write a textbook on the subject of mmWave power amplifier design. The objective was to produce a book suitable for engineers starting to work at mmWaves, providing them with the important design methodologies reinforced by a number of practical applications. The topics are treated at the appropriate depth to guide the engineers in the design of modern and sophisticated power amplifiers. The focus is on GaN technology, which has been shown in recent years to dominate power mmWave applications due to its capabilities for high power, gain and efficiency. Even though the main focus is on GaN material, the content is equally applicable to any field effect based technologies, such as GaAs or InP. The opportunity to engage in such a project became a reality after two events. One was the encouragement and support I received from Prof. Denise Consoni after a lecture I gave at Escola Politecnica, University of São Paulo, Brazil, in 2019. The other was the prospect of being secluded during one year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and using that time to some advantage. The resulting text represents the author’s twenty years of accumulated experience in the area of mmWave design.

The story on this book starts in the summer of 1995. At that time I was working for Hewlett Packard – Microwave Wireless division, on digital radio design, including VCO’s and Frequency multipliers. One day I received the visit of Professor Branner from University of California in Davis. He brought with him a graduate student working on frequency multipliers for his thesis. We spent most of the day chatting about the various issues related to frequency multipliers. Before he left he said “Why don’t you write a book on this subject? You have the background and enough material”. In the following days that idea started populating my neurons and for the next 12 months I was heavily involved in this project.

Microwave Mixer Technology and Applications

The story on this book is a bit different. Bert Henderson and I organized a Workshop for MTT in 2005 on the subject of Noise. I thought this would give a good subject for a book and invited Bert to work together as editors. But that was not the right time for Bert. A couple of years passed and the idea to do a project together remained in the back of our minds. Other book ideas came but neither he nor I were ready, until 2008. One day he called about the idea of writing a book on mixer patents. We were then both ready, and that became the seed for this work. It two years to develop the format and identify key patents, and another four years to add in the needed theoretical background and actually write it.
